Presentation Report
This presentation will focus on Changhua, a language used by policy migrants from inland regions to remote areas in China. Changhua" is a newly created hybrid language that was pidginized by the policy migrants as they communicated with the local people. This presentation takes a factory in Yunnan Province, China, as a case study to examine how "Changhua" was created and then disappeared as the factory underwent corporate reform and the second and third generations of immigrants left the factory. Even without clear geographical borders (the factory walls), cultural (Shanghai-Yunnan) and social (state-owned factory-farmer) borders seem to have always distinguished "us" from "others" and been expressed in Changhua.
