"Governance by Diverse Actors in Regional Revitalization Projects: A Case Study of the Nara Urban Renovation Project" (50 minutes for presentation, 30 minutes for discussion)
Presentation by Fumi Yamauchi
In recent years, reflecting on the negative impacts brought about by the principles of neoliberalism in the market, there has been a reconsideration of the nature of local communities for their people. This report provided various points of discussion on this topic using the urban renovation project in the "Konoike Sports Park and Former Nara Prison" located in the northeast of Nara City as a case study.
Of particular note is the role of new players, namely artists and creators. Their perspectives fundamentally redefine the value of the community. In addition, the project is designed so that people will gradually transform their own internalized boundaries through encounters with others and experiences of diverse values through the project activities. Thus, we conclude that an artistic perspective is indispensable for residents to understand and take ownership of the project and, in turn, contribute significantly to the formation of an inclusive and symbiotic community where pluralistic values are woven together.
